Rise of Nations is a real-time strategy computer game, developed by Big Huge Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios on May 20, 2003. The development of the game was led by veteran game designer Brian Reynolds, of Civilization II and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. The game has taken several concepts from turn-based strategy games such as territories and attrition warfare.[1] Rise of Nations features 18 civilizations, playable through 8 ages of world history The core of Rise of Nations's gameplay centers around the concept of "territory". The area near the player's settlements is considered their territory, and players may only construct buildings within their territory or that of an ally. A nation's borders can be expanded by the creation and expansion of cities and forts, a technology tree, and obtaining access to certain rare resources. Other technologies and resources cause enemy units to suffer attrition over time, which can eventually destroy an unsupplied invasion force.Much like other spin-offs in this popular series, Rise of Nations adds a cadre of new features to the original game. In this game, you can explore 6,000 years of history as you build up the economy of your new civilization and ensure its continued survival.
This newest extension pack introduces players to six new nations to conquer and cultivate. In addition, there's the option to engage in four unique campaigns that are single player only. Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots also comes with over 20 original units and introduces players to government types you've never seen before in this game series. You can play through eight different epochs at your own pace, from Ancient Age at the earliest to Information Age thousands of years later on.
The graphics in Rise of Nations might be a bit basic for some users, especially compared to video games in today's high definition gaming world. The myriad of different options will more than make up for it for a lot of players who want the flexibility and experience of creating their own civilization from the ground up though.

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition is a re-release of the main game and its expansion on Steam, released on June 12, 2014. Graphical changes to the game include updated textures, lighting and water. Other changes to the game include Steamworks integration which adds cloud saves, Steam Trading Cards, achievements, Twitch integration and multiplayer with Elo ranked matches to the game. Extended Edition is developed by SkyBox Labs
